Our Story

Mahjong Imperial was born in 2019 in the heart of Maryland, California, when founder Christian found herself hunting for a mahjong set worthy of her grandmother's memory. Her grandmother, a Shanghai native who had emigrated to the United States in the 1970s, had spent every Sunday teaching Christian to play mah-jongg on a battered bamboo set with faded tiles.

When that beloved set finally broke beyond repair, Christian scoured shops and websites for weeks and found nothing that captured the beauty, history, and joy of the game she loved. So she set out to create it herself.

Working with a small network of independent artisans across North America and Asia, Christian began designing mahjong sets that were as beautiful as they were playable. The first collection launched in 2020 with just four designs. It sold out in three weeks.

Today, Mahjong Imperial offers over dozens of designs from luminous mother-of-pearl classics to playful pop-art editions to hand-illustrated botanical sets. Every single tile is selected with the same question in mind: would Grandma Chen have smiled at this?

We ship worldwide from California. We pack every order by hand. And we believe that a great game set deserves to be passed down through generations.
